The process of getting life insurance involves procedures that determine your health status and risk for health problems that can compromise your life span. Each insurance company has its own requirements and parameters but there are basic procedures that can be expected when getting insurance.
Formal Application
A formal application is basically done by filling out a form that asks a variety of questions ranging from personal to medical ones. You will be asked about you age, height and weight. Questions about your lifestyle habits such as whether your drink, smoke and exercise will also be asked.
Interview
The interview, conducted by a representative from the insurance company, is done about 1 to 2 days after you have submitted your application. Some conduct it on the phone while others may want to do it in person. The purpose is to verify the information you have provided in your application. This is very important in cases when you may have entered the wrong information. For consistency with your answers, it's also good to keep a copy of the form you have submitted.
Medical Examination
Your current health status has a huge impact on getting your insurance application approved and getting low cost insurance. This is why a medical examination becomes an essential part of the process. A medical officer will take your full medical history including the disease you had, surgeries you have undergone, medications you have taken and take regularly, allergies and many other. A brief medical history of your immediate family such as your parents and siblings is also required.
More detailed information about your lifestyle will also be asked. They will need to find out how often and how long you exercise, how much alcohol you drink per week and how many sticks of cigarette you smoke. Other factors that put your health at risk such as your job and work environment are also taken note of.
Once the medical history is completed, you will also need to undergo some diagnostic tests. Blood test, urinalysis and fecalysis can be used to screen if you have a particular disease or not. Your blood pressure will also be measured to check for hypertension. Depending on the outcome of your medical history and the company, you may also be asked to get an electrocardiogram and/or chest x-ray to find out if you have heart problems. Finally, the company may also request for your medical records from your doctor.
